Getting a Marriage License in Manassas Park

Both parties must appear in person at the Prince William County Circuit Court to apply for a marriage license. You need a valid government-issued photo ID. Foreign identification is acceptable as long as it is readable in English. There is no Virginia residency requirement. You do not need proof of a previous divorce, and no blood test is required.

Under Virginia Code Section 20-14, the clerk of each circuit court is responsible for issuing marriage licenses. The fee is $30, payable by cash, check, or credit card. The license is valid for 60 calendar days from the date it is issued. The ceremony must take place within Virginia. An unused or expired license must be returned to the clerk's office.

After the ceremony, the officiant must file the completed license with the clerk within five days. The clerk then sends the record to the Virginia Department of Health. Once processed, you can request a certified copy from VDH or directly from the circuit court clerk. Certified copies from the court typically cost $2.50 each. VDH charges $12 per certified copy for records from 1936 forward, as set under Virginia Code Section 32.1-273.

Note: Virginia does not require a waiting period between applying for a marriage license and the wedding ceremony. Your license is valid immediately upon issuance.

There are two main ways to get a certified copy of a Manassas Park marriage record. The first is through the Prince William County Circuit Court clerk. The second is through the Virginia Department of Health. Which route you use often depends on how old the record is and how quickly you need it.

For marriages from 1936 to the present, the Virginia Department of Health maintains centralized records. You can submit a request by mail using Form VS6 (Application for Certification of Vital Record). The fee is $12 per copy. You must include a copy of a government-issued photo ID or two secondary forms of identification. Mail requests to: Division of Vital Records, P.O. Box 1000, Richmond, VA 23218-1000. VDH also accepts walk-in requests at 2001 Maywill Street in Richmond.

For records before 1936, only the circuit court clerk has them. Contact Prince William County Circuit Court directly. Under Virginia Code Section 32.1-267, the state's vital records system was established in the 1930s, so older records stayed with the local court. The Library of Virginia also holds some historical marriage records and indexes that can be useful for genealogical research.

Under Virginia Code Section 32.1-271, marriage records become public after 25 years. Before that, access is limited to the parties to the marriage and certain qualified individuals such as legal heirs or people with a documented need.

Finding Older Manassas Park Marriage Records

Manassas Park was established as an independent city in 1975, carved out of Prince William County. Before that, the area was part of Prince William County. Marriage records from before 1975 that involve people who lived in what is now Manassas Park would be in Prince William County records. The Prince William County Circuit Court clerk can help you search those older files.

The Library of Virginia is another valuable resource. It holds microfilm copies of old marriage bonds, licenses, and registers from across the state. Many records go back to the 1700s. You can search their online catalog at the Library of Virginia local records page. Staff can also help you find records by county of origin when the city did not yet exist as a separate jurisdiction.

Virginia FOIA law, specifically Virginia Code Section 2.2-3704, gives you the right to inspect and copy public records. Marriage records more than 25 years old are open to the public. Requests can be made in person, by mail, or online depending on the office.
