Getting a Marriage License in Manassas

To get a marriage license in Manassas, both parties must appear in person at the Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk's office at the Judicial Center. Bring a valid photo ID. If either party has been married before, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate for the former spouse. Under Virginia Code § 20-14, the clerk issues all licenses. Virginia has no waiting period. The license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued.

After the ceremony, the officiant signs and returns the completed license to the clerk. The clerk records the marriage and sends a copy to the Virginia Department of Health as required under Virginia Code § 32.1-267. If you need to change your name after marriage, request a certified copy of the marriage license from the clerk at the time of the ceremony or any time after. The clerk's Seals on Wheels program also operates on select evenings and Saturdays for convenience.

To get a certified copy of a marriage license issued by the Prince William Circuit Court, you can complete a request online through the clerk's website at pwcva.gov. The clerk will contact you for payment. You can also print the Marriage License Copy Request Form and mail or bring it in person to the Judicial Center at 9311 Lee Avenue. The fee is $2.50 per copy.

If you are not sure which circuit court issued the marriage license, contact the Virginia Department of Health Division of Vital Records at P.O. Box 1000, Richmond, VA 23219-1000. Complete the Application for Certification of Vital Record (form VS6), include a copy of your photo ID or two secondary forms of ID, and send the $12 fee to the State Health Department. Their phone is 804-662-6200. VDH can identify which circuit court issued the license if you provide the approximate date and location of the marriage.

Under Virginia Code § 32.1-271, marriage records are restricted for 25 years. After that period, they become public records. Before 25 years, only the named parties, immediate family, or those with a documented legal need can get a copy.
